Subject terminology taboo
Explain subject-specific terms without using the obvious words: the Taboo game format as subject-language training. If you can explain it without naming the term, you’ve truly understood it.
How the method works
- 1
Prepare concept cards: the subject-specific term at the top, with 3 to 4 forbidden words underneath.
- 2
Form teams; one person explains while the team guesses against the clock.
- 3
The opposing team's rule keeper watches out for taboo words.
- 4
Count points, rotate roles, make sure everyone explains at least once.
- 5
Wrap-up: define the most challenging terms together clearly and reinforce them.
Material
- Term cards
- Taboo words
You can find free, ready-made worksheets for the work phase in the TeachPie Marketplace , sorted by subject and grade, in three levels.
Common pitfalls in practice
- Ensure subject-matter accuracy after every round
Variants
- Pupils create the Taboo cards themselves—the actual learning activity.
- Draw or use mime instead of speaking for linguistically diverse groups.
