Think-Pair-Share
The classic cooperative activity: everyone thinks individually first, then discusses in pairs and shares their results with the whole class. This gets everyone thinking, not just the quickest to raise their hands.
How the method works
- 1
Think: Ask a prompt question and allow 2 to 3 minutes of quiet individual thinking time (notes are allowed).
- 2
Pair: Discuss in pairs. Compare and explain your answers, then agree on a shared answer.
- 3
Share: Selected pairs present their answer to the whole class; the teacher brings the ideas together and records them.
- 4
Optional: Pick names at random when sharing (e.g. draw names) so everyone stays prepared.
Material
- Prompting question
- Note cards
You can find free, ready-made worksheets for the work phase in the TeachPie Marketplace , sorted by subject and grade, in three levels.
Common pitfalls in practice
- Make sure there is time to think before sharing
Variants
- Think-Pair-Square: Two pairs compare their results before sharing with the whole class.
- Written share: Pairs write their main point on cards, which are then grouped by theme.
