Escape room / egg race format
Puzzle boxes and codes turn practice exercises into a mission with a countdown. They boost motivation and real teamwork to solve problems when the puzzles are relevant to the subject—not just decorative.
How the method works
- 1
Introduce the backstory and goal (“You have 40 minutes to decipher …”).
- 2
Teams start with the first envelope/puzzle; each solution unlocks the next one.
- 3
The teacher hands out tiered hint cards when teams get stuck (getting help costs, for example, time).
- 4
Finale: The last code opens the “treasure chest” with a wrap-up task.
- 5
Debrief: Which task was tricky, and which strategy saved you?
Material
- Task cards
- Prompt cards
- Answer codes
You can find free, ready-made worksheets for the work phase in the TeachPie Marketplace , sorted by subject and grade, in three levels.
Common pitfalls in practice
- Game mechanics must not overshadow subject depth
Variants
- Digital version with form codes instead of physical locks.
- The reverse: teams create an escape puzzle for the parallel class themselves (deepest engagement).
